20th Sikkim State Boxing Championship 2024 Kicks Off at Namchi Boxing Hall
Namchi, December 23 (IPR): The 20th Elite and Youth Men’s & Women’s Sikkim State Boxing Championship 2024 commenced today, organised by the Namchi District Boxing Association (NDBA) in collaboration with the Sikkim Amateur Boxing Association (SABA).
The opening ceremony on December 22 was a momentous occasion, graced by distinguished personalities. The Chief Guest for the day, Mr Raju Basnet Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, alongside Mr Satish Chandra Rai MLA for Namchi-Singhithang Constituency, officially opened the event. Also Mr Ringzing Ongyal Chopel attended as the Guest of Honour.
The ceremony commenced with a heartfelt address by Mr B. Tshering Bhutia, President of the NDBA. This was followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, marking the official commencement of the championship.
On the second day of the event Mr Bhoj Raj Rai Minister for Urban Development and Food and Civil Supplies Departments attended as the Chief Guest, alongwith Mr Ganesh Rai Chairman NMC.
The event also had the presence of Ms Sandhiya Gurung, recipient of the prestigious Dronacharya Award and Mr Jashlall Pradhan, recipient of the Arjuna Award.
The gathering also included Ms Tshering Dem Bhutia, former Adhakshya, along with esteemed coaches and members of the boxing community.
In his address, Mr Bhoj Raj Rai extended his gratitude to the organising team for successfully conducting the tournament. He praised the State Government for its initiative to engage the youth of Sikkim through sports and activities. He highlighted the vital role of sports in fostering a healthy and active lifestyle, which he believes is essential for overall well-being.
Further, he lauded the efforts of the State Government in improving the infrastructure of Namchi district, ensuring better facilities for the public. He also stressed the importance of maintaining discipline and fair play, not only in sports but also in everyday life.
In a call for environmental responsibility, he urged the use of eco-friendly products at events and programmes, advocating for a reduction in plastic use. He noted that promoting eco-friendly practices not only benefits nature but also helps support local vendors, creating a sustainable ecosystem that empowers the community.
The second half of the event saw the presence of Mr N.B. Dahal, Minister for Roads and Bridges, as the Chief Guest, and Mr SJ Lepcha as the Guest of Honour.
The championship concluded on a high note, with enthusiastic participation and recognition, showcasing the spirit of collaboration in both sports and community development.
