National Panchayati Raj Day observed at GPUs under BAC Namchi

Namchi, 24 April : The Constitution of India recognized Panchayats as ‘Institution of local self governance’. Panchayati Raj Institution in India have been in existence for a long time, it has been observed that these institutions have not been able to acquire the status and dignity due to various reasons like absence of regular elections, insufficient representatives from weaker sections like Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes and women, lack of financial resources, etc.
The constitution Act (73rd Amendment Act) 1992 came into force w.e.f. 24th April 1993 vested constitutional status on Panchayati Raj Institutions. Accordingly, Government of India in consultation with the States has been decided to celebrate 24th April as National Panchayati Raj Day (NPRD). The then Prime Minister of India Shree Manmohan Singh declared the first National Panchayati Raj Day on 24th April 2010.
To commemorate this annual tradition of observing the National Panchayati Raj Day, the Damthang Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) and other 09 Gram Panchayat Units under the Block Administrative Centre, Namchi observed this special day in their respective GPUs. The Damthang GPU which is also been selected as the The Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY) village observed this day by organising a ‘Special Gram Sabha’ under the chairmanship of Hon’ble Panchayat President Shri Lalit Rai. The programme was attended by Hon’ble gram panchayats, Block Development Officer, Namchi, Field Facilitator, SIRD & PR, Junior Engineers, BAC Namchi, RD functionaries of the GPU and the members of gram shaba.
The programme began by welcoming of the Chief guest and other dignitaries with fl bouquet and offering of khadas.
The chairperson in his address welcomed the gatherings and highlighted the importance of observing the National Panchayati Raj Day.
Shri Tenzing Bhutia, Block Development Officer (BDO), Namchi in his deliverance stressed upon the idea of strengthening the institution of Panchayati Raj. He mentioned that the role of Panchayats and its functionaries are of vital importance and the idea of efficient nation building can only be achieved through their active participation. The BDO, Namchi on this special day announced the launching of the ‘Grameen Sanchar Abhiyaan’ on 25th April 2022 by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim at Assangthang, Namchi. The primary objective of this mission is to disseminate information of various governmental schemes and policies so that the general public can associate and benefit out of these.
Furthermore Shri Bhutia highlighted the sustainable development goal (SDG)
1- no poverty, SDG
2- zero hunger and SDG
3- decent work and economic growth.
The programme adjourned with a vote of thanks by the chairperson, the Panchayat President of the Damthang GPU.
