Namchi District observed the World Environment Day 2023 themed ‘Beat the Plastic’ at Bio Diversity Park, Kitchudumra, Kamrang

Namchi, 5th June(IPR): Along with the rest of the state, Namchi District also observed the World Environment Day 2023 themed ‘Beat the Plastic’ at Bio Diversity Park, Kitchudumra, Kamrang today. Namchi District Forest Department commemorated the occasion in convergence with ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’ under the Government of Sikkim and ‘Mission LiFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India.
The programme had the presence of Zilla Adhakshya (Namchi) Ms. Anjeeta Rai as the chief guest and 4th Sikkim NCC Battalion Col. N.S. Negi as the guest of honour. Present among others were DFO(Environment) Mr. Palzor Ongda Bhutia, DFO (Wildlife) Mr. T.B Subba, DFO (Soil) Ms. Tshering Denka, ITI Namchi Principal Mr. M.N. Bhutia along with the staff, students, NCC cadets and the public.
Addressing the gathering, DFO (Wildlife) spoke on the significance of World Environment Day and stressed on this year’s theme, which focuses on limiting people’s usage and actions toward plastic pollution. He also delved into the motive of ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’, a noble green initiative conceived by the State Government, that entails planting 100 saplings per child born in the state. In addition, he also spoke about the objective of ‘Lifestyle for Environment’ of the Government of India, which nudges individuals and communities to protect and preserve the environment.
On the occasion, the chief guest handed over gauva saplings and a letter of appreciation on behalf of the Chief Minister of Sikkim to four families of newborn babies of Kamrang, for their registration under the ‘Mero Rukh Mero Santati’ initiative.
It may be mentioned here that, a total of 400 saplings of different species namely Arocaria, Gulmohar, Jaral, Jaisara and many others were planted as a part of the programme.
