Sports and Youth Affairs Department, Namchi celebrated National Sports Day

Namchi, 29th August (IPR): National Sports Day, 2023 themed ‘Sports are an enabler to an inclusive and fit society’ organised by Sports and Youth Affairs Department was held at Bhaichung Stadium, today.
The Chief Guest for the occasion was DC (Namchi) Mr. M. Bharani Kumar accompained by Guest of Honour Former National Football Player Mr. Basant Yonzon, JD (Sports Department) Ms. Tshering Ongmu Bhutia, Deputy Director (Sports Dept.) Mr. Basant Pradhan alongside Officials, coaches and other sporting personalities.
It maybe mentioned that the National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29th August every year. It is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand Singh. The day also serves as a reminder for all of us to recall the contributions, determination and extraordinary achievements of the athletes and their influence in shaping societies.
During the course of the programme the Sports Department distributed certificates to participants of Football, Archery, Karate, Boxing and Yoga. An exhibition football match of U-14 of Namchi Sports Hostel A&B was also played.
The Namchi District Boxing Association in collaboration with the Sports and Youth Affairs Department also presented a medal and token of appreciation to the elite boxers who had participated in the recently held 4th BFI East Zone Elite Men’s Boxing Championship in Meghalaya.
Sikkim won the team championship title. Sikkim boxers finished at the top of the table with eight medals, including six gold, one silver and one bronze medal. In this, players of Namchi District Boxing Association won three gold and one bronze. The association felicitated the team coach Mr. Mukesh Rai alongwith
Master Krishna Kailash Rai (51 kg weight category), Master Pravin Chettri (63.5 kg), Master Gaurav Chettri (67 kg) who won gold and Master Ramlal Munda (48 kg) who won bronze.
Similarly, to acknowledge the immense support provided in uplifting the sporting segment in the district, the Sports and Youth Affairs Department also gave a letter of appreciations to DC (Namchi) Mr. M. Bharani Kumar, Namchi Boxing Association, Namchi Tae Kwon-Do Association, Namchi Volleyball Association, Namchi Badminton Association, Namchi Karate Association, Namchi BAC Sporting Club and one solo marathon runner Master Bikash Chettri, respectively.
