‘Jal Diwali’ – water for women, women for water campaign at Daragaon, Jorethang

Namchi, 8 November (IPR): ‘Jal Diwali’ – water for women, women for water campaign was held at the Water Treatment Plant (WTP), Daragaon at Jorethang, today. A team of 30 women from various Self Help Groups (SHG) of Naya-Bazar Jorethang Nagar Panchayat visited this WTP to understand and familiarize with its functioning and other water testing facilities.
The campaign is supported by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoH&UA) Government of India, Urban Development Department (UDD) Government of Sikkim, Deendayal Antyoda Yojana-National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-NULM) and Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT 2.0).
Present during this programme were Ms Yogeeta Rai (Principal Town Planner Urban Development Department-cum-Mission Director AMRUT 2.0), Mr Sameer Rai (Mission Director AMRUT 2.0), Mr. N T Bhutia SE (PHE, Department), Mr Y P Adhikari DE (PHE, Department), Ms Srijana Chettri (Deputy Secretary, UDD), Officials alongwith participation of women from Self Help Groups (SHGs) of Naya-Bazar Jorethang Nagar Panchayat.
Mr Y P Adhikari DE (PHE, Department) explained to the SHG members about the process involved in water treatment from filtration to chlorination and also how the water is distributed to various parts of the town. The team also learned about the methods adopted in the distribution of safe and clean drinking water to the households.
Moreover, during the course of the programme the SHG members also put forth their suggestions and queries fostering a greater understanding of the importance of clean water.
