Ms Anupa Tamling, DC Namchi, flags off Namchi’s Freedom Run under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan

Namchi, 3 August (IPR): The Freedom Run under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, organised by the Sports Department in collaboration with the District Administrative Centre Namchi and the Social Welfare Department, commenced this morning at 8 am. The open category race covered a 10km route from Kishan Market to Helipad and back, while the school category race, covering 6km, ran from Kishan Market to Chardham Junction and back.
Present during the event were Mr Ganesh Rai, Chairman NMC, Vice Chairman Ms Sabitri Tamang, Councillors NMC, Ms Anupa Tamling DC Namchi, Mr Subhash Ghimirey ADC Namchi, SDMs and officers from different line departments.
The highlight of the event were the star runners Mr Premius Bhutia, a veteran runner as well as a social motivator, and Ms Asha Phurba Tamang, a gold medallist at the Coal India Marathon 2023.
Today’s run was organised to promote a drug-free Namchi and a drug-free Sikkim under the vision of the Chief Minister of Sikkim, Mr Prem Singh Tamang for a better and brighter Sikkim.
The DC, in her address, thanked all the participants and the organising committee for their enthusiastic involvement in the event. She emphasised the importance of incorporating sports and healthy activities into daily life and highlighted the adverse effects of drug abuse, particularly on the younger generation.
She encouraged people to support those in need and to avoid stigmatising addiction as a social taboo. She further stated that the run served as a valuable example for spreading awareness and encouraging those dealing with drug dependency and those recovering from addiction.
Miss T Ongmu Bhutia, Additional Director Sports and Youth Affairs, provided insight into how sports and a healthy lifestyle benefit society and guide youth towards positive well-being. She urged that every household should address addiction with understanding and focus on solutions rather than responding with hatred and anger.
She also thanked the star runners, Mr Premius Bhutia and Miss Asha Phurba Tamang, for their participation and for serving as role models, demonstrating that personal growth and good habits can flourish regardless of age, time, or setbacks. She noted that winning and losing are just parts of a game, but true victory lies in one’s determination to persevere.
Furthermore, the star runners of the event Mr Premius Bhutia and Ms Asha Phurba Tamang in their address congratulated and applauded all for their enthusiastic participation. They expressed their gratitude towards the organising team as well as to the Chief Minister of Sikkim Mr Prem Singh Tamang for their constant support and motivation towards leading Sikkim into drug-free State.
It is noteworthy that the event was also supported and participated in by the Biker’s gang, ‘Mutuks,’ from West Sikkim, who contributed energetically in promoting the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.
The event had approximately 300 participants, including school children, and entrants in the Men’s Open and Women’s Open categories, along with active participation from officers of the Line Departments.
The event concluded with the distribution of medals and cash prizes to the winners, as well as certificates to all participants.
