Namchi, February 10(IPR): An awareness programme on Nasha Mukth Bharat Abhiyan, organised by Namchi All Sikkim Government Drivers’ Association in collaboration with the District Administration Centre Namchi was held at Central Park, today.

Ms Anupa Tamling DC Namchi graced the occasion as the chief guest. Present amongst others were Ms Tirsang Tamang ADC Namchi, Mr Nim Pintso Bhutia SDM HQ, Mr Saran Kalikotey SDM Namchi alongwith with the officials from the line departments, members of the association and Non-Governmental Organisation, students and the public.
Addressing the gathering, the DC emphasized the importance of collective efforts to build an addiction-free society. She commended the association and participants for their commitment and stressed that combating issues like substance abuse and suicide requires active involvement from all sections of society. To protect the rights and welfare of elderly citizens, she imformed about the provisions under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, and said that strict action would be taken against those who commit atrocities against senior citizens and assured that the administration would extend necessary support to them. Lastly, she called on everyone to come together and work to build a “healthier, safer, and more beautiful Namchi.”
Mr Sunil Subba Vice-president Namchi District All Sikkim Government Drivers’ Association in his address thanked the District Administration for extending unwavering support to the association. He reflected on the responsibilities we hold as human beings and shared his personal experience of how substance abuse resulted in the loss of a close friend and family member. He also touched upon the vital role of parents in guiding their children and instilling positive values to nurture them into responsible individuals, thereby contributing to the development of an addiction-free society.
Ms. Shanti Tamang from Namchi Police Department delved upon the safety measures to reduce road accidents and highlighted fines under the law and the Motor Vehicles Act. She also informed the public about the importance of witnesses and bystanders in providing timely medical assistance to road accident victims, assuring that the police would not subject rescuers or Good Samaritans to legal proceedings. Meanwhile, Mr. Siddarth Subba also from Police Department provided insights on the POCSO Act.
Mrs. Sophia Lepcha, AD Child, Senior Citizens, and Persons with Disabilities Welfare Department, talked about the significance and objectives of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative. She further briefed various government programmes that prioritise the welfare of women and children across the country. Additionally, she informed the audience about the launch of the Women Helpline (Toll-Free Number 181) and the Child Helpline (Toll-Free Number 1098) to provide assistance to those in need.
The programme included several impactful awareness activities. Members of the association presented a self-composed drama illustrating the devastating effects of drug abuse on society. They also performed a group song encouraging youth to refrain from drug abuse.
Additionally, Voice NGO based in Namchi showcased a play highlighting the rights and support available to senior citizens under the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
