Awareness-cum-Sensitization Programme on Child Rights and Legislation, and other Child Related Schemes under Women, Child, Senior Citizen & Divyangjan Welfare Department
Namchi, 5 September: The District Child Protection Unit (DCPU), Namchi, under the aegis of the Women, Child, Senior Citizen & Divyangjan Welfare Department, organized an Awareness-cum-Sensitization Programme at Lingmoo-Paiyong GPU, Yangang Division, Namchi District.
The programme aimed to sensitize ASHA, Anganwadi Workers, Ward Panchayats, and general public on child rights and legislation.
The programme had the presence of Panchayat Members Lingmoo-Paiyong GPU, District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), Child Protection Officer, Probation Officer and Child Welfare Committee Member.
During the programme Ms. Pema Wangmu Bhutia, DCPO emphasised on key legislation such as Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, Child Labour Act, Child Marriage Act, etc.
She elaborated on the procedures as laid down under the Acts, while dealing with the cases of children in difficult circumstances. She further, mentioned the roles and responsibilities of the concerned stakeholders for effective implementation of the legislation in the GPU level.
Ms. Neelam Subba (CWC Member) provided an overview of the roles and responsibilities of the CWC in dealing with the cases of child in need of care and protection. She further highlighted the importance of mental health awareness, stressing that mental well-being is as crucial as physical health. She also conducted an interactive session with the participants on mental health issue.
Mr. Wangyal Tamang (Protection Officer, NIC) sensitized the participants on the Adoption Regulation, 2022 and Foster Care Adoption and its legal frameworks and procedures.
Lastly, addressing the gathering, Panchayat Member Shri. Mohan Raj Rai emphasized to the participants about the rights of children and the legal protections available and also urged the participants about the importance of child welfare and reporting mechanisms among communities to create a safer environment and holistic development of the children.
