Namchi Reaffirms Commitment to Healthy Living on International Yoga Day

Namchi, June 21 (IPR): Reinforcing its commitment towards promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle, a mass yoga programme was organised at Bhaichung Stadium, Namchi, today to commemorate International Yoga Day 2026.
The programme was organised by the District Administrative Centre, Namchi, in collaboration with the Department of AYUSH, Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim, under the directive of the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. This year’s celebration was observed under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Aging,” highlighting the importance of yoga in promoting lifelong physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from officers and officials of various line departments, educational institutions, organisations, and members of the public, with over 1,000 participants joining the mass yoga session.
The celebration brought together people from diverse age groups and backgrounds, including government officials, youth, senior citizens, students, and volunteers, reflecting a collective commitment towards wellness and fostering a strong sense of community spirit.
The programme also underscored the significance of collaborative public participation in promoting health and well-being, demonstrating how community engagement strengthens government-led initiatives and encourages healthier lifestyles.
In addition to the yoga session, a Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) screening camp was organised at the venue, where participants availed free health screenings for conditions such as hypertension and diabetes to facilitate early detection and preventive care. A brief Zumba session also added vibrancy to the celebration.
Adding a meaningful community touch to the event, students set up stalls offering healthy beverages, cookies, and tea at nominal rates to support their school treasury funds. Participants also undertook a cleanliness drive at the conclusion of the programme by collecting and properly disposing of waste generated during the event, reinforcing the message of civic responsibility.
Present on the occasion were MLA, Namchi-Singhithang Constituency and Chairman, DACS, Mr. Satish Chandra Rai; Additional Political Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister (Namchi), Mr. Bishnu Prasad Sharma; District Collector, Namchi, Ms. Anupa Tamling; Superintendent of Police, Namchi, Ms. Sonam Dolma Bhutia; Chairpersons; Officers on Special Duty (OSDs); Heads of Offices; officials and staff of various line departments; police personnel; representatives of My Bharat Kendra; members of the Government Drivers’ Association, NCC, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Sarathi Sangathan, Old Age Home, Boomtar, Patanjali Yoga Centres (Units I & II), students, and members of the public from across the district.
