Namchi, May 21 (IPR): A meeting for the formation of Transgender Protection Cell was chaired by District Collector Namchi, Ms Anupa Tamling, at District Administrative Centre Namchi, today.
The meeting aimed to implement the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2020, with a focus on safeguarding rights, streamlining registration processes, and ensuring prompt investigation and protection measures for the transgender community.
DC in her address, underscored the importance of fostering societal awareness to better identify and support transgender individuals. She emphasised inclusivity and respect, pledging comprehensive assistance for the community’s upliftment.
Highlighting procedural difficulties, she directed the concerned officials to conduct thorough verification before issuing a certificate of identity to transgender or gender-change individuals.
Additionally, she directed the Social Welfare and Women & Child Development Departments to organise sensitisation programmes to promote mental health awareness and social acceptance.
Stressing equality, she underlined that transgender individuals must receive equal access to government welfare schemes without discrimination.
The committee members also deliberated on transgender registration protocols, educational opportunities, social security measures, and broader welfare initiatives.
Present during the meeting were Sr. SP Mr. Karma Gyamtso Bhutia, SDM Namthang Mr. Pravin Gautam, CMO Namchi Dr. S. N. Adhikari, Additional Director DEO Mr. G. P. Sharma, CDPO Namchi Mr. Luxman Tamang, and W.O. Mr. Sonam Dadul Bhutia and W.I. Ms. Dimee Bhutia from the Social Welfare Department.
