Namchi, 28th March: Animal Husbandry Dept Explored the Potential of the Sector in Melli Region for further Intervention to upscale the Animal Husbandry activities in Sikkim.
A team of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Dept Officials lead by Dr. P. Senthil Kumar, Secretary, Animal Husbandry accompanied by the Dr. Mala Bajgai, Principal Director, Veterinary Services, Dr. Sharman Rai, Director Animal Husbandry , Dr. Karma Tenzing Bhutia, Director, MQC, Dr, Durga, Addl Director, Poultry, Dr. AL Rai, Addl Director, Namchi, Dr Sunita, Joshi, MD, The Sikkim Livestock Processing and Development Corporation Ltd, DE, Dr Sidhant, Veterinary Officer, Melli and other officials and staff of AHVS dept visited Melli region to explore the options and potential to further improve the Animal Husbandry sector in the region on 28th March 2023.
The team inspected various farms of the farmers and interacted with the Animal Husbandry farmers including Dairying, Piggery, Goats, poultry, etc,to understand the challenges and potential in the sectors. The team also assessed the feed requirements and its availability for the livestock and also visited the feed mill established under RKVY by Agriculture Department and provided required inputs to further improve the feed quantity and quality for the betterment of the farmers. Thereafter the team visited the Melli Poultry meat processing unit being established under The Sikkim Livestock Processing and Development Corporation Ltd for it status and inspected the trail run. The team also suggested improvements to the existing infrastructure.
Secretary Dr Senthil directed the implementing officers to ensure quantity and quality of infrastructure and directed MD, SLPDCL and Divisional Engineer to work out the further requirements to meet the commercial operations of the Melli Poultry Processing Unit and submit the estimates for seeking funds from the appropriate sources.
During the discussion, the Secretary, AH&VS highlighted some of the findings during the field visits made by him and requested the departmental officials to thoroughly read the guidelines of various schemes implemented by the Department including Piggery incentive and Dairy incentive schemes of the Government for flawless implementation. He urged the officers to work as a team to uplift the economic conditions of the farming community of Sikkim and at the same time maintain strict vigil on the threat of various emerging infectious and contagious diseases in the state. The officials also visited and inspected the piggery farm and Veterinary Hospital at Mellidara and motivated them to work for the benefit of the Animal Husbandry farmers of Sikkim. While visiting the Melli Check post Secretary enquired about the implementation and enforcement of various Government notifications and regulation of movement of livestock and livestock product through the check post to ensure welfare of the people of Sikkim in general and Animal Husbandry farmers in particular.
