Celebration of International Women’s Day by Damthang SAGY VILLAGE

Namchi,9th March: 44-Damthang Gram Panchayat Unit recognized under Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana-Phase V (2021-2022) in collaboration with the Sikkim Regional Centre of G.B Pant National Institite of Himalayan Environment (GBPNIHE) at Village Administrative Centre (VAC) celebrated International Women’s day, which was led by the women staffs of VAC on 8th March.
The Program was chaired by Smt. Jyoti Rai, President, Damthang GPU as the Chief Guest. Zilla Panchayat, Mr. C.K. Gurung and Ms. Sushmita Rai National Football Referee as Special Guest.
Also present during the program were Panchayat members,VAC staff, Members of ASHA workers, ICDS teachers, Members of Self Help Groups and MGNREGA
The program started with welcome speech by Miss Pem Diki Sherpa, Vice President of Damthang GPU and shared the role of women among the 65 women participants from 05 wards of GPU. She also highlighted the importance of Women in the society.
Mrs.Nirmala Gurung (ASHA) placed her short speech regarding women’s health and suggested every women to take their health as a priority as they are the pillar of the family.
From SHG member Mrs. Pem Nima Sherpa shared her experience on role of SHG in changing their lives and making women financially independent and empowered.
Dr. Kailash S. Gaira from GBPNIHE shared the innovative approaches to enhance the environmental education, gender equality and women empowerment, and elaborated the importance of conserving nature and ecosystem services. The contributions of women for the sustainable and profitable organic farming, eco tourism and rural entrepreneurs were highlighted at the local level by him. He said that this year’s theme of “Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality” states progress is in the hands of women and encouraged the women of Damthang GPU, further.
Miss Ninchhen Dolma Tamang from GBPNIHE, linked women with water and focused the approach to empower women for spring water conservation and its sustainability.
During the event, three elderly empowered women of Damthang GPU were felicitated for their active participation and involvement in PWD works for a long time. Also, two more women were felicitated for their self initiative in waste management and cleanliness.
Smt. Jyoti Rai, President, Gram Panchayat encouraged all women for their participation and appreciated the contribution of state’s schemes for women empowerment. She highlighted the importance of maintaining health and hygiene of women in their household and role of community organization. She then acknowledged the collaboration of G.B. Pant National Institute and its contribution in Damthang GPU.
The Gram Panchayat took this opportunity to thank all the Women of Damthang GPU for their contributions towards the society.
The program was conducted by Ms.Hema Rai,PDA and at the end Ms.Dawa Ongmu Sherpa presented her Vote of thanks.
