DC Namchi Conducts Review Meeting to Strengthen Measures for Preventing Atrocities Against SC/ST Communities

Namchi, 18 March (IPR): Ms Anupa Tamling DC Namchi chaired a meeting to review the enforcement of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, along with its amendments in 2018 at District Administrative Centre Namchi, today.
The Act is designed to protect SC/ST communities from discrimination and violence by criminalising various forms of abuse, including physical, verbal, social, and economic atrocities. These include severe offences such as forced disrobing, caste-based abuse, social boycotts, and political discrimination.
Present during the meeting were Mr Karma Gyamtso Bhutia Sr.SP Namchi, Ms Trisang Tamang ADC Namchi, Mr Nim Pintsho Bhutia SDM (HQ), Mr Saran Kalikotey SDM (Namchi), along with the heads of various concerned departments.
During the meeting, the DC stressed the importance of prompt and decisive action in response to any cases of atrocities. She assured that victims would receive immediate relief, which would include financial compensation, medical aid, legal support, and necessary rehabilitation services.
The Welfare Officer WO provided an update on the status of atrocities and reported on the awareness camp held the previous day. According to the report, no incidents of atrocities had been recorded so far, and no cases were registered to date.
