District Collector (Namchi) visit to Melli to address the various issues

Namchi, 24th March: The District Collector (Namchi) Mr. M. Bharani Kumar visited Melli, today. The purpose of the visit was to address the issues of muck dumping on the left bank of Teesta by the companies working in the Railways project at Melli (WB side) and apprehensions of scouring effect and possible river flooding at Melli (Sikkim side). The inspection team comprised of OSD (Railways, Transport Department), Chief GM Rangpo Circle (IRCON), Executive Engineer (Railways NJP), DFO T (Namchi), ADFO (Kalimpong Forest Div), BDO Sumbuk, DPO Disaster Management (Namchi), DE (NH Div), AD Tourism (Namchi), Sr Geologist (Dept of Mines & Geology), Police, Panchayat and local gentries.
The team also visited Melli PHC (Sikkim side), Bhalukhola (WB side) and Triveni (Sikkim) which was located opposite to Laborbotey (West Bengal) to assess the situation.
A brief meeting was held with all stakeholders to propose immediate and long term mitigation measures to prevent any possible damages in the forth coming monsoon season.
