Hon’ble Governor visits KVK Namthang
Namchi, 21 August 2024 (IPR): Hon’ble Governor of Sikkim Mr Om Prakash Mathur visited Krishi Vigyan Kendra Namthang, Namchi district, today.
Upon his arrival he was given a warm welcome by Mr J D Bhutia (IAS) Secretary Agriculture Department and Raj Bhavan,Ms Anupa Tamling DC Namchi, Sr SP Dr T N Gyatsho Bhutia, Mr Tshering Thendup Bhutia Director cum State Nodal Officer, KVK Agriculture Department, Mr I P Shivakoti Sr Scientist KVK South Sikkim, officers from the line department, staff of KVK and Farmers.
The programme commenced with the plantation drive on the theme “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, # Plant for Mother campaign, which was carried out by the governor, who was joined by the Secretary.
The Governor expressed his longstanding interest in agriculture during his address. His visit highlighted multiple aspects of discussions on vast potential that lies within the agricultural sector, stressing the opportunities available to farmers are limitless.
He emphasised that with the right support and innovation, the benefits of agricultural endeavours could reach unprecedented heights.
The Governor strongly encouraged for the formation of self-help groups among female farmers, stressing the importance of empowering women in the agricultural community.
The Governor called upon everyone to contribute to the upliftment of Sikkim’s agriculture and floriculture sectors. He shared his vision of transforming these sectors into thriving industries, showcasing the possibilities that lie ahead with dedication and innovation. He reassured the farming community that the government is firmly behind them, committed to provide support in every possible way to ensure their growth and success.
Further, he assured the farmers that the government is fully committed to support them in every possible way, encouraging them to take bold steps in realising the state’s agricultural vision.
During the programme, a video presentation highlighting the Global Campaign with the theme on “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, # Plant for Mother campaign was showcased.
Mr J D Bhutia, highlighted the significant benefits that Sikkim’s farmers are receiving under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY). Through this scheme, various types of irrigation equipment are being provided to farmers at subsidised rates, enhancing agricultural productivity.
The Secretary emphasised that the new agricultural development model is particularly focused on empowering the youth within the agricultural sector.
Addressing the challenge of soil acidity, a major issue in many agricultural areas of Sikkim, the Secretary mentioned that the Krishi Vigyan initiative is working at an advanced level to combat this problem, ensuring healthier soil and better crop yields.
He also pointed out the importance of the Krishi Unnati Yojana, under which farmers are benefiting significantly from the National Food Security Mission. This initiative is playing a crucial role in ensuring food security and improving agricultural practices.
In addition to these schemes, the Secretary highlighted the positive impact of the Organic Mission Scheme, which supports farmers in cultivating 75,000 hectares of organic land. This initiative is a key element in promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing the livelihood of farmers.
Mr T T Bhutia, seized the opportunity to propose the establishment of two new Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) in the recently formed district of Soreng and Pakyong. He emphasised the importance of these agricultural extension centres in fostering local agricultural development, providing farmers with essential training, and promoting the adoption of modern farming practices. The proposal aims to strengthen the agricultural infrastructure in the new district, ensuring that farmers have better access to resources, knowledge, and support to improve productivity and sustainability.
Mr I P Shivakoti delivered a detailed PowerPoint presentation showcasing the various activities and initiatives undertaken by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Namthang.
His presentation highlighted the KVK’s efforts in promoting advanced agricultural practices, providing skill training to farmers, and supporting sustainable farming methods.
Furthermore, the Governor, accompanied by other dignitaries, visited the KVK lab and farm within its premises.
The Governor also visited the exhibition stalls presented by the Passi, Tokol-Bermoik, Rong-Bul, Dong, and Karek Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) where he actively interacted with the representatives of the FPOs.
Additionally, skill certificates from ASCL were awarded to the following five candidates from the FPO:
1. Ms Leela Chettri
2. Mr Shambu Rai
3. Mr Bijay Gurung
4. Mr Bimal Rai
5. Mr Bhakta Bdr Gurung.
The programme also featured the release of the Strategic Research and Extension Plan (SREP) book by Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) Namchi District.
Later, the governor visited the processing unit of Crafted Fibres, a cluster-based business organization supported by NABARD, located in Namthang.
During the visit Dr. Tshewang Norbu Bhutia, the Subject Matter Specialist in Animal Husbandry, welcomed the Governor. He along with the staff members, provided a detailed explanation of the processing unit’s operations and functions.
