International Women’s day celebration, 2023

Namchi, 10th March (IPR): The International women’s Day, 2023, themed ‘Empowering women through Sports’ under ‘Khelo India Dus ka Dum’, organised by Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Namchi, was celebrated with great fervor and enthusiasm at Bhaichung Stadium, today.
The Chief guest for the day was Zilla Adakshya (Namchi) Ms. Anjeeta Rai. She was accompanied by Deputy Chairman (NMC) Mrs. Sabitri Tamang, Deputy Director (Namchi) Mrs. Tshering Ongmu, Officials and staff from line Departments.
Addressing the gathering, Ms. Anjeeta Rai congratulated the Sports and Youth Affairs department for successfully organising the event in commemoration of the International women’s day. She stated that women holds a great significance in the society and has the capabilities to uplift the state and encouraged the gathering to take up Sports as a career or in any form as Sports has holistic spectrum for growth.
Further, She also highlighted the Schemes launched by the State Government to empower women and added that the State Government has created various platforms for women to grow from strength to strength especially in the field of sports.
The department also presented awards to Women Referees who has made their mark in concerned field at national and international levels, they are as follows:
1. Ms. Susmita Rai,( National Football Referee)
2. Ms. Tshering Doma Bhutia(National Umpire Badminton)
3. Mrs. Pem Lhamu Lepcha( Football Coach)
4. Ms. Hem Kumari Rai (Karate Coach)
5. Ms. Bidhya Wati Rai(International Player Muay Thai)
6. Mrs. Chandra Rai.( Women’s Body Building)
During the programme, a total of 25 Nationals and Internationals women players of various disciplines were also honoured. During, the course of the programme students from various schools demonstrated different self defence techniques which was headed by Karate Coach Ms. Hem Kumari Rai.
On the occasion, various other sporting events was held including tug of war between Namchi District Administration Centre (DAC) and Sikkim Youth Affairs(SYK), Namchi wherein DAC stood victorious.
An, Open Women Football Match was also played between DAC Namchi and Health Department wherein DAC won the match by 2‐0 and was declared as winner
It may be mentioned that the department is conducting a series of sporting events till 24th March to mark the festivity of International Women’s Day. Some of the events are Chief Minister 1 mile run, Badminton, Table Tennis Competition, Yoga and many more sporting challengers.
