Namchi Celebrates National Sports Day 2024

Namchi, 29th August (IPR): The Sports and Youth Affairs Department of Namchi commemorated National Sports Day 2024 with a special event held at Bhaichung Stadium to honour the legendary hockey player Major Dhyan Chand Singh.
The occasion was honoured by the presence of Ms Anupa Tamling, District Collector Namchi, as the Chief Guest and Mr Basant Yonzon former national football player and President of the Namchi Football Association, as the Guest of Honour.
Other notable attendees included Mr Saran Kalikotey SDM Namchi, Ms Tshering Ongmu Bhutia Joint Director Sports Department, Mr Basant Pradhan Deputy Director Sports Department along with other officers, coaches, and sports personalities.
The event began with a warm welcome to the guests, followed by the ceremonial lighting of the lamp. Ms Anupa Tamling led the tribute by garlanding the portrait of Major Dhyan Chand Singh.
Ms Sobha Gurung, Assistant Director of the Sports Department, delivered a brief address, highlighting Major Dhyan Chand Singh’s contributions and the significance of National Sports Day, which is celebrated annually on 29th August to mark his birth anniversary. She emphasised the day’s importance in recognising the remarkable achievements of athletes and their impact on society.
The programme included a pledge by school students and officials in support of the Fit India Movement, encouraging a healthy lifestyle through regular physical activities and sports.
Following the pledge, the Sports Department organised a range of activities, including:
Chief Minister One Mile Run (U-14 Boys and Girls)
Football Exhibition Match (U-14 Namchi Sports Hostel vs. SAI Namchi)
Karate Demonstration
The event concluded with a prize distribution ceremony, recognising participants for their achievements in various competitions.
Awards were presented to winners of the Badminton competitions for U-11 and U-14 Boys and Girls, which had taken place on 28th August, as well as for the Chief Minister One Mile Run, Boxing, Taekwondo, and U-14 Football.
It maybe mentioned here that the event was organised under the able direction of Ms Tshering Ongmu Bhutia, Joint Director of the Sports Department, Namchi.
