Namchi, Nov 25(IPR): National Institute of Technology Sikkim organised its 6th Convocation Ceremony at the congregation hall of Tathagata Tsal, Ravangla, today.
Mr Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Governor of Sikkim graced the occasion as the chief guest. Present during the ceremony were, Mr TT Bhutia Area MLA, Mr Ramesh Kumar Saraogi Chairperson of NIT Sikkim, Mr GP Upadhaya Advisor(Mines and Geology Department), Board of Governors of NIT Sikkim, Prof. Mahesh Chandra Govil Director NIT Sikkim, teaching faculty, staff, students and their parents at large.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor extended his congratulations to the students on the successful completion of their academic course. He commended the faculty members and students for showcasing exceptional commitment in the pursuit of knowledge and expertise. He said that the NIT Sikkim is a premier educational institute that can help shape the future of the North-Eastern region through its research endeavour in empowering and transforming human resources for the benefit of society.
He said that with the advent of new technology in this century, the students need to hone their technical skills in the new trend of technology and leap forward with innovations in their field to achieve greater heights, citing examples of Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai, Shantanu Narayan and many other Indian origins CEOs of leading top tech companies of the world. He also enlightened how the New National Education Policy 2023 envisions a flexible, and inclusive educational landscape that equips students with relevant skills needed for new industry.
He further mentioned the programmes and schemes such as ‘Start-Up India’, ‘Stand Up India’, ‘Make in India’, and ‘Digital India’ schemes launched under the leadership of Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi to promote the entrepreneurial and start-up culture in new India. Which, he exhorted to harness its benefit for economic growth.
Mr Saraogi in his address, said that due to the dynamic nature of the world demands a commitment to continual learning “we aim to cultivate not just technically proficient graduates but visionaries who can navigate the complexities of an ever-evolving global landscape”. He inspired them to propel India into the global spotlight as a hub of innovation and enterprise. Further, he advocated them to inhibit critical thinking, and out-of-the-box problem-solving skills, etc to be able to become well-rounded professionals in their fields.
Director NIT speaking on the occasion highlighted the journey of the Institute since its inception. He briefed that presently a total of 750 students are enrolled in the institute, offering five B.Tech programmes, three M.Tech programmes, and PhD programmes in all engineering disciplines, basic science, and humanities. He highlighted various developments, and research works carried out in collaboration with other premier institutes and research agencies of the country by the students and faculty of the institute. For which, he extended his gratitude towards the Government of India and the Government of Sikkim for continuous support in the accomplishment and endeavours of the institute.
It may be mentioned here that the NIT Sikkim conferred degrees to a total of 198 students which include 7 PhD, 31 M Tech, 16 MSc, and 144 BTech graduate students. Notably, 11 Gold Medals in categories such as Departmental Gold Medal, Institute Gold Medal, and Director Gold Medal were awarded for their academic performance and achievement.
During the programme, the Governor of Sikkim and the Chairman of the Board of Governors were also presented with mementos for their support and acknowledgment
