Namchi, 14 May : A one-day training programme on Poultry Litter Composting Techniques was organized on 14th May 2025 at Melli Dara Agriculture Farm, Sumbuk Block by the Agriculture Department, ATMA Namchi District in collaboration with the Rain Forest Research Institute, Jorhat, Assam. The programme was conducted under the support and guidance of Hon’ble Shri Nar Bahadur Pradhan, MLA, 12-Melli Constituency.
The participants were welcomed by Mr. Wangyal Lepcha, Deputy Director Agriculture, who emphasized the importance of proper poultry litter management and the benefits of utilizing compost derived from poultry waste. He highlighted how sustainable waste management practices can enhance soil health and farm productivity.
Following this, Dr. Nation Chamling, Deputy Director cum Deputy Project Director of ATMA, gave an insightful presentation on the PM-Kisan scheme, mentioning that a saturation drive is underway this month. He urged all farmers who have not yet availed the benefits to register under the scheme. He also elaborated on the various roles, responsibilities, and facilities provided by ATMA Namchi District for the benefit of farmers.
The main resource person, Mr. Rajarishi Bhattachariya, Senior Technical Officer from the Rain Forest Research Institute, Jorhat, Assam, delivered a comprehensive session on poultry litter composting. He shared various structures he has developed and explained different scientific composting methods suitable for the local context. He encouraged the farmers to actively participate in composting and make the best use of poultry litter available to them. He further motivated them to strive towards making Melli Dara a model composting hub in the region.
Mr. Rajeev Kumar Pradhan, Agriculture Development Officer (ADO), Sumbuk, also addressed the gathering, encouraging farmers to take up composting sincerely and give their best efforts for the overall progress and agricultural development of Sikkim.
The event was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Pintso Bhutia, ATM, Sumbuk.
The programme was efficiently anchored and conducted by Mr. Bunty Lama, Agriculture Inspector, Melli Dara.
As a follow-up to the training, a demo poultry litter composting structure will be built at Melli Dara Agriculture Farm. All the farmers expressed great enthusiasm and showed readiness to participate actively in the composting initiative. They are motivated to make the best use of poultry litter, which is expected to significantly benefit their land, soil health, crop yield, and overall economic condition.
