Tourism and Civil Aviation Department Namchi Holds Meeting for Discussion on Addressing Challenges and Ensuring Sustainability in the Tourism Sector
Namchi, 17 March: A meeting was conducted by Tourism and Civil Aviation Department to discuss several critical aspects of tourism in Namchi District with a focus on improving the overall tourist experience, addressing systemic challenges, and ensuring sustainable development on 17th March at local hotel in Namchi.
The meeting was chaired by Principal Secretary Tourism and Civil Aviation Department Mr C.S Rao, IFS.
Also present during the meeting were Additional Director Permit Cell Mr Tenzing Bhutia ,Deputy Director Permit Cell Mr Sonam Rinchen Bhutia, Deputy Director TIC Namchi Ms Lamin Theengh, Assistant Director Ms Dipti Rai Namchi and Various stake holders from Namchi district.
During the meeting following key points were raised and discussed thoroughly :
1.The Nathula permit system was a primary topic of conversation. Visitors to Nathula, an important tourist destination, are required to obtain a permit.
Notably, guests who stay in Namchi for at least one night can receive this permit for free. However, the system faces certain challenges, including:
a) The requirement of a hardcopy of the permit.
b) Difficulties with the collection process, which causes inconvenience for tourists.
Efforts are being made to streamline this process to ensure a smoother experience for travellers.
2.There was a robust discussion on how to enhance tourism in Namchi. Some of the suggestions put forward include:
a) Improved Communication: Strengthening communication between stakeholders, including tourism operators and the local tourism department, to ensure a coordinated effort.
b)Informational Outreach: It was proposed that written information be displayed in hotels and homestays to help guests learn more about the region’s attractions.
c) Social Media Marketing: The idea of promoting Namchi through digital platforms and social media channels was highlighted as a cost-effective and far-reaching strategy.
3.A significant development discussed in the meeting was the passing of the Tourism Trade Act on March 5, 2025. Key provisions of the Act include:
a) Establishment of a Sustainable Tourism Development Fund to support:
b) Capacity building initiatives for local businesses.
c) Preservation and maintenance of existing tourist destinations.
d) Promotion of cultural sustainability in the region.
This new legislation aims to bolster sustainable tourism practices while promoting Namchi as a desirable destination.
4.Concerns about the state of infrastructure, particularly parking facilities, were raised. These issues are especially apparent during peak tourist seasons, where overcrowding and limited space can cause significant disruptions.
Some solutions proposed include:
a) Development of better parking facilities to accommodate the increasing number of visitors.
b) Introduction of a separate payment gateway for fund collection to streamline the process.
c)Improvement of road conditions and general infrastructure to support the growing influx of tourists.
5.The need for better stakeholder engagement was emphasized throughout the meeting. Key stakeholders identified include:
a)Hotel owners
b)Tour operators
c)Government officials
It was noted that coordination among these groups is essential for addressing Permit system challenge, Fund management concerns and Effective marketing strategies to promote Namchi.
A unified approach and increased collaboration were identified as essential for overcoming these challenges.
The meeting underlined the importance of a coordinated and strategic approach to tourism development in Namchi.
Important themes included improving permit processes, ensuring sustainable growth, enhancing infrastructure, and fostering collaboration between various stakeholders.
Moving forward, continued discussions and partnerships are anticipated to address these issues and enhance the tourism framework in Namchi and the surrounding areas, ensuring that tourism in the region grows in a sustainable and effective manner.
