Training program on “Scientific organic seed production techniques of high yielding maize composite varieties” held at KVK Namthang

Namchi, 7th March: Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) RC NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Tadong in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra Namthang conducted one day training program on “Scientific organic seed production techniques of high yielding maize composite varieties” at training hall of KVK Namthang for the benefit of farmers of Namchi District.
The programme commenced with the welcome address by Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Namthang Shri Indra Prasad Shivakoti. He also briefed the gathering about the main aims and objectives of the programme and role of KVK Namthang. Dr. J. K. Singh, Senior Scientist (Plant Breeding) & Head of KVK East Sikkim gave a lecture on “Scientific cultivation practices and participatory seed production of maize” to farmers and extension functionaries present. Dr. E. Lamalakshmi Devi, Scientist (Genetics and Plant Breeding) from ICAR-RC-NEHR, Sikkim Centre gave in-depth lecture along with power point presentation on “Scientific techniques for organic seed production of high yielding maize composite varieties” to the attendees. To encourage the farmers to adopt the new technology and also for the purpose of seed production, composite seed of maize var. Sikkim sankul makka -2 were distributed to the 20 progressive farmers of Rabitar, Bermiok-Tokal and Passi village of Namchi District. The above mentioned farmers’ field will be monitored jointly by ICAR Tadong and KVK Namthang in every stage of its cultivation. The programme was also witnessed by Dr. Nation Rai, Agriculture Development Officer, Namthang, FPO members and extension functionaries of Namthang Agriculture and Horticulture Farm.
The inaugural session of programme was hosted by Mr. Tshering Dorjee Tamang, Farm Manager of KVK Namthang. The programme also had a demonstration in KVK Namthang farm followed by a field visit, demonstration and distribution of seeds to the farmers of NICRA adopted village, Rabitar by the Scientist and officials of both the institute.
